“I turned my palms up, testing the silver cuffs around my wrists. Though the cuffs were invisble to any eye but mine, it had taken a long time for my paranoia to ease whenever someone’s idle gaze lingered on my wrists. They flexed with my movement, a second skin over my own. Only my trapped magic could stir them, tightening the cuffs as it pleased.”
The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem
The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem is the first book in The Scorched Throne series, and it is absolutely fantastic and fun!
Sylvia entered the village of Omal a few years ago, running away from a past she doesn’t share with anyone. She stays and apprentices under a chemist named Rory. Despite her unwillingness and hesitation to form attachments, she befriends Sefa and Marek. She grows comfortable, putting behind the person she was before.
And the person she was, is the Jasad Heir. She is heir to the Jasad throne, a kingdom that has been obliterated. Presumed dead, she’s in hiding, not wanting to reveal herself or take up the mantle that could restore her kingdom.
But that all changes when the Nizahl Heir, Arin enters the village of Omal. He is hunting Jasad and has the power to sense magic. Suddenly terrified, Sylvia is on edge. For running through her veins is Jasad magic, and while it’s surpressed by cuffs placed upon her by her grandparents, the magic still rises under her skin. Especially when she is really stressed.
When Sylvia uses her magic in front of Arin on accident, he decides to use her for his own purposes. He names her as the Nizahl Champion in an upcoming series of trials, thereby protecting her from the consequences of using her magic but also using her for his own purposes of drawing more Jasad.
This book is really amazing. It’s a fast-paced fantasy set in an Egyptian inspired setting. The dynamics between different characters like Syliva and Arin adds a lot of tension to the book but also keeps you hooked to every single page. The world building was incredible, and it was just an all around perfect book. I’m really looking forward to book 2!
