Thief of Night by Holly Black

“The Hall women were born to hard breaks and bad decisions. They fell in love with the wrong people so consistently it was as though an ancestral curse doomed them to heartbreak, from a grandmother married to a guy so terrible she killed him, to Charlie’s last boyfriend , who shot her. Posey said that a man had to have a hole in his head, his heart, or his pocket for one of the Hall women to go head-over-heels for him— and Posey told people’s futures for a living.”

Thief of Night by Holly Black

Thief of Night is the highly anticipated sequel to Book of Night. It will actually be insanely difficult to review this novel without spoilers for book one, so if you haven’t read that one, go do it!!

For those of you that have read Book of Night, Thief of Night starts off right where book one ends. Charlie Hall, con artist and charlatan, has just bound the shadow of the man she cared about to her. But now she must face the consequences because Red might look like Vince (who was actually Remy), but he certainly doesn’t act like Vince. Red pushes against her, but he is there for her in ways she never expected, and she can’t ignore that either. Red is trying to figure out who he is, even while his cousin Adeline is trying to get him to accept the fortune of Remy and become him again. But Red isn’t Remy, just like he isn’t Vince, and he can’t be those people no matter how much anyone else wants him to be. Charlie is tasked by the Cabal she now works for to protect Red to investigate a massacre, and the story weaves together her trying to solve what is going on while learning who Red is.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when starting this book, but I was drawn in immediately. Holly Black has written a perfect duology. Charlie is such a fabulous character. She has given herself over to a life of cons and crimes even though she knows the difference between good and evil, and good always wins out. Even when she had the power to control Red, she didn’t try. She always held that he was his own person and had the power to choose for himself. The way shadow magic works in this series is incredible (and honestly, the scenes in which Red has to feed on Charlie’s blood are incredibly steamy). I really loved how much Charlie and Red balance each other out and grow together. The ending has me shattered because it was just absolutely perfect. I can’t recommend this duology highly enough. It is everything you want it to be and more.

Holly Black continues to write my favorite books, and this was no exception. Massive thanks to Tor for sending me an early copy. Thief of Night releases September 23!!
