“There seems to be a story that you keep telling yourself, and I understand… it has served you for some time. It was real. It kept you safe. But you’ve outgrown that tale, and now it’s holding you back from becoming who you are really meant to be.”
A Fellowship of Bakers & Magic
If you are a lover of cozy fantasy and the Great British Bake Off, then you do not want to miss A Fellowship of Bakers & Magic. Cozy fantasy has become a very popular subgenre, and I will be honest, I haven’t read as much of it as I would like to. I recently saw this book at Barnes and Noble, was enchanted by the cover, read a few pages and happily took the book home and dove into it right away.
Arleta is a human living in Adenashire. She is surrounded by creatures of magic- orcs, elves, fairies, dwarves and has to work twice as hard to shine. Arleta is a talented baker, and her special ingredients are what set her bakes apart and make them truly magical. But every day Arleta is racing to the market to get a stall, often pushed into the back simply because she has no magic, just trying to make ends meet. Her dream is to one day own a bakery of her own.
Next door to Arleta are two orcs who look out for her (and frequently sample her bakes). Deep down, she knows they have become father figures for her, but even despite that, she often turns down their dinner invitations and offers of help.
But then one day they enter her into the Langheim Baking Battle. Arleta is shocked. This a massive baking competition, and she feels as if she doesn’t belong. But when an elf named Theo shows up to escort her to the competition, Arleta has very little choice but to make a big leap for her future.
And it is at the Baking Battle where Arleta meets some new creatures, a fennex named Jez and a dwarf named Doli. The three strike up an unlikely friendship and bake their hearts out.
This book is everything you want it to be. Cute, cozy, romantic. Full of friendship and delicious baked goods. The setting of Adenashire and Langheim are so gorgeous and beautiful, and I would go there in a second. I was immediately immersed in this world. This series was an instant favorite, and I already picked up book two and am completely adoring it!
