“The inky blue of the forest path called to her, and she let her feet

take her into her favorite part of the woods for a moment of solitude, and respite from her own mind. The last of the night’s drizzle trickled through the canopy and dripped down the back of her neck. She shivered and pulled her hood up.”
The Tempest of Ravens is E.A. Bard’s debut novel, and it is brimming with magic, romance and strong characters who fight for what they believe in. Set in 1600s Scotland against the beautiful setting of castles, forests and cliffs against the sea, this story is perfect for romantasy lovers.
Maeve has believed all her life that she is cursed. When a pox killed her parents, she believed she was the cause. As she grew older, she couldn’t ignore the magical things that seemed to occur around her, the uncanny visions she has, which seem to tell of the future and the ravens that seemingly haunt her every step. The residents of Invergarry are wary of her and she knows it’s only a matter of time before they accuse her of being a witch.
Maeve’s greatest concern is her upcoming betrothal (one she doesn’t want) and the impending war with England that is drawing her brother into battle. Yet she also fears the magic that seems to grow stronger within her every day.
When the villagers drive her out of the village, she is rescued by a handsome stranger, Eamon who agrees to help her reach her betrothed and get to safety. They begin to travel together with her brothers, Bearuch and Aeneas. Aeneas wants nothing more than to help lead Scotland to victory, and Bearuch worries that he will not be left as heir by his own brother. Both brothers have their faults, but they add a layer of family and history to the story that further showcases just how strong Maeve is.
As the group starts their journey, they are ambushed by the English and must flee for safety to Dunnottar and the last standing castle in Scotland. It is there that they will have to face not only the English, but the battles that have been growing amongst themselves and within themselves.
This book is beautifully written. E.A. Bard has gorgeous prose, you feel completely immersed in the setting and the time period of the story. It’s like stepping into another world and not realizing where you are for awhile until you glance around and realize real life is still there. (And let’s face it, those are the best kinds of books, aren’t they?). A Tempest of Ravens has a large cast of incredible characters, and I adored every single one of them. Massive thanks to E.A. Bard for sending me an early copy. A Tempest of Ravens releases 10/24!
