“Sarkis turned around and began to beat his forehead very gently against the wall. “The great god is punishing me,” he said softly, “for my crimes. I cannot go to his hell, and so he has sent a woman to torment me.”
Swordheart by T. Kingfisher
My love of T. Kingfisher grows with every book. Sometimes I read a lot by an author and then think, she can’t possibly write anything that will make me love her more. And then she does. Swordheart just made me love her writing even more than I already did.
This is set in the World of the White Rat. Having already fallen head over heels for the Saint of Steel series, I thought to myself, yes, of course, I need more. Swordheart is the start of a new trilogy (thank the freaking White Rat that this is a trilogy). It is one of the funniest books I’ve read in a long time. I just laid in bed reading and snorting the entire time. It’s impossible not to read this book with a smile on your face.
Halla is a very respectable widow. When her husband died, she began to take up housekeeping to his uncle. This gave her a place to live but also provided Silas with some comfort at the end of his life. When Silas dies, he leaves Halla everything. Much to the dismay of his family, particularly Aunt Malva and Cousin Alver (the clammy hands! 😂). They lock Halla in her room, planning on forcing her to marry Alver so that they can inherit all of Silas’ properties and money. Halla decides she would rather die, this way her nieces can inherit instead. She pulls an old sword off the wall, is about to figure out how to fall on it, when Sarkis appears.
Sarkis is the man who has been living inside the sword. His sole job is to protect the wielder, who at this moment is Halla. She absolutely cannot kill herself, he cannot let that happen. So instead, the two escape and start a journey to help Halla rightfully gain the inheritance that belongs to her.
And the humor is to die for. The romance is perfection. The world of the white rat gets only more and more interesting- in only a way that T. Kingfisher knows how to build. And the characters could not be any more fabulous. I just ADORED this book with all of my heart. There is nothing more perfect.
Thankfully for all of us readers and T. Kingfisher fans, I don’t think she sleeps? There’s always a new book coming out 😂.
