Parasol Protectorate (Books 1-3) by Gail Carriger

“Someone was trying to kill Lady Alexia Maccon. It was most inconvenient, as she was in a dreadful hurry. Given her previous familiarity with near-death experiences and their comparative frequency with regards to her good self, Alexia should probably have allowed extra time for such a predictable happenstance.”

Blameless by Gail Carriger

The Parasol Protectorate series is one I have had for awhile, and I was so glad to finally get into it. The series starts off with Soulless where we meet the main character Alexia Tarabotti.

Alexia is quite unique in that she is Italian and a spinster and has no soul. In a world where vampires and werewolves exist, this means Alexia is immune to their attacks which proves to be an advantage to her throughout the series.

Alexia is very independent and full of sass. She is absolutely no nonsense and doesn’t put up with anyone’s negative behavior toward her. When a vampire tries to attack her, not realizing what she is, she is forced to kill it in self defense. But then as more vampires start disappearing, Alexia is believed to be responsible. The only way to figure out what is going on is to investigate herself. But unfortunately that means having to work with Lord Maccon, a werewolf who should be appalling in every way but isn’t. Lord Maccon finds Alexia to be annoying and infuriating but also dangerously attractive.

I picked this series up thinking this would be a Victorian set urban fantasy so to speak (which in a way it is) but it’s also a mystery series and has a wonderful romance storyline that I just adored. Alexia and Lord Maccon have enemies to lovers vibes and their absolute frustration with each other becomes more amusing as they fall in love.

The series continues in the same exciting vein over books two and three, Changeless and Blameless, and I was so hooked on all of them. The story is so well paced, riveting and fun, and I look forward to finishing the series and reading the other books the author has set in this universe.
