This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews

“You speak of it as if the future were a living thing.”
“Sometimes it feels that way. I’ve become … disturbed by it. It’s this kingdom, Solentine. This city. It messes with my mind. It has changed me, and there’s no going back.”
“Perhaps it simply showed you who you truly were.”

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews was one of my most anticipated reads of the year. I knew I was going to love it, and I absolutely loved it. It is everything a reader might want in a fantasy novel and an isekai novel. This is probably one of my favorite portal fantasy novels of all time. It’s incredibly well-written, the world-building is so immersive I forgot about reality and the characters are all so amazing that I just wanted to keep reading. I could barely put this one down.

Maggie survives by working two jobs and doing her best to make ends meet. She finds solace in her favorite book series which she reads over and over again even though it’s unfinished. The author disappeared and she has been waiting for the ending for about a decade. One day, Maggie wakes up in a strange world, but one she recognizes immediately. It is Kair Toren, the city in which her favorite book series is set. And for some reason she has been transported into it.

Kair Toren is a dangerous place, and Maggie soon realizes she has gained a special power. She can’t be killed. Every time she is killed, she suffers the pain of it but wakes up again. Not only that, no one knows the story of this world better than her, and soon Maggie realizes that she has the chance to change the future and save some of the lives of her favorite characters by using her knowledge of the books to influence events.

As the story unfolds, Maggie meets a variety of characters, some of which she remembers from the book and some who were too minor to get page time. But regardless, Maggie starts building a family, a group of people she wants to fight for and help save along the rest of Kair Toren from what is coming next.

The only thing about this book that killed me was the ending. This was such a wonderful book from start to finish. The pacing was incredible, and the world was so amazing. Maggie is one of my favorite characters to date. She was so smart, funny and it was amazing to watch her grow and really make her place in Kair Toren. I have so many questions so I cannot wait to read the next book once it is out!
