Voidwalker by S.A. Maclean

I had read S.A. Maclean’s debut, The Phoenix Keeper, and just about died over how much I loved it. I was mildly hesitant for Voidwalker because it falls into the monster romance category and that can be really hit or miss for me. Needless to say, I was completely blown away by how good this book was, and S.A. Maclean has cemented herself as one of my favorite authors. This book has no business being this good! Except it is and I loved it.

Voidwalker follows Fi, a smuggler who is able to move between worlds by her ability to walk through shards/voids that exist between these worlds. She is damn good at her job and she knows it. When she is hired to transport energy capsules the job seems too good to be true and it is. When the job is almost finished, she finds out she won’t get payment unless she cuts a shard into a government building and transports the capsules there. Fi doesn’t like the sound of it but she comes face to face with her ex, Astrid and does the job anyway, even when it blows up in her face.

This brings turmoil to the city as the daeyari in charge, Antal, is removed from his post and the neighboring daeyari, Verne, claims it for her own. The daeyari are dangerous creatures that require a human sacrifice in exchange for protection. Antal and Fi are thrown against each other as Antal wants a way to reclaim his territory and Fi wants to build a better future for the people of her village.

This book was so so good! The world building was spectacular. I loved the idea of the void, the shards and the planes. It was such a cool magic system, and Fi and Antal were such wonderfully unique characters. This book was just a blast from page one. I really enjoyed it so much and I am looking forward to reading the second book. I highly recommend this and also, S.A. Maclean has shared some wonderful fan art for this series on her page. Definitely worth checking out!
